Sperm Whales

Sperm whales are the only species that produce ambergris. These whales can be found from oceans around the world, including in the coastal waters of Britain. Sperm whales can grow up to 67 feet long and can weigh over 63 tons. It is said that the population of Sperm whales has increased, but they weren’t always prolific.

In the past, Sperm whales were usually hunted for their blubber. Their blubber was used to make candles, soaps, machine oils, and even pencils. Ambergris was also gathered for its scent. But during the 1980s, a ban on whaling was passed due to millions of whales being killed. Ambergris was also included in the ban.
