A new urgency
Jenna’s request for support in the face of her terminal illness changed our dynamic, creating a new level of urgency and need. Jenna pleaded with me, “Emily needs someone to love her, someone she can trust.” I felt a wave of emotions – fear, responsibility, sympathy. And Jenna asked me to adopt Emily. She expressed her despair about her daughter’s uncertain future in foster care. Tears were streaming down her face: “I can’t bear the thought of her ending up with strangers.” “Please, you’re the only other family.” The seriousness of her request hit me hard. Taking in a child was no small matter, and Jenna’s desperation exacerbated her plight.
