Pushing for clarity
When Jenna stopped, I asked her again what she wanted me to do. Despite her emotional state, I urged her to be clearer. “Yes, Jenna, you need to be aware,” I said, keeping my voice calm. She wiped her eyes and took a deep breath. Finally, she said, “I want you to take care of Emily.” She barely whispered more. The request hung in the air between us, harsh and unanticipated.

Difficulties in responding
Jenna struggled to respond, her fragile appearance lessening her struggle, and the tension between us remained evident. “I don’t have anyone else,” she said shakily. “Please, she deserves a better life than I have now.” I could see her eyes full of despair, but my betrayal was still too fresh. I wasn’t sure I could help her and Emily.
