For 11 seasons, The Big Bang Theory has made us laugh, cry, and fall in love with science (although we still don’t understand half of what they’re saying); it’s the kind of carefree show that fans need. Since the show premiered in 2007, it has transformed into television’s highest rated comedy. That’s why we decided to take a look at what our favorite nerdy, non-nerdy characters have been up to since the show first kicked off 10 years ago.
If you’re not a math and science enthusiast, it doesn’t matter because when watching this show, you can easily relate to the awkward and charming characters – despite not always understanding their language. Millions of viewers have fallen in love with The Big Bang Theory. I mean, it is already well into its 11th season! Not many television shows get to say the same. Throughout all of the seasons, we have watched as our favorite characters evolve season from season; some have even gone on to do things we never anticipated, such as (spoiler alert!) like Sheldon proposing to Amy!
As most fans have been watching the show since the beginning, we really feel a connection to the characters. And we’re sure the cast feels the same way too. For nearly a decade, they have been working side by side. Sometimes seeing the cast mates more than their own families. While they’re all buddy-buddy on-screen, sometimes it can get heated off-screen. But hey, that comes with the territory.
Some cast members have had to deal with salary negotiations, especially in seasons 11 and 12. Undoubtedly you’re aware that Kaley Cuoco, John Galecki, and Jim Parsons are the main characters and now they even make the list as the highest-paid comedy actors on TV. Recently, Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik have joined main character roster. As a show of support, Cuoco, Galecki, and Parsons all took a pay cut of $100,000 in order for their fellow actresses to receive their raises. Now that’s admirable.
The cast is enjoying new attention, landing roles left and right. Some are even earning awards left and right – and it’s all richly deserved. We’re talking a look at season one to now and the cast’s lives off-screen. Take a look at just how different, or same, the characters are in real life!
John Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter
42 year old John Galecki is known for two iconic roles, obviously as the nerdy physicist Leonard Hofstadter from The Big Bang Theory (TBBT), but what about the other? That’s right, we’re talking about his Roseanne days when he was the awkward boyfriend David Healy.
The cellist is set to reprise his role as Healy for an eight-episode mini series coming out in 2018. And if you can’t wait for the mini-series, there’s always The Big Bang Theory of course! And as it’s in season 11, you’ve got plenty to watch.
Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper
What would The Big Bang Theory be without Jim Parsons and his character Sheldon Cooper? Actually, let’s not think about it! From age six, Parsons knew he wanted to be an actor and we’re so glad he pursued that dream.
Parsons’ role in The Big Bang Theory has gone on to earn him a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe, and in 2011, he made his Broadway debut. In 2017, he married his long time partner, Todd Spiewak.
Wil Wheaton as Himself
Up next is the one and only Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation, who played Sheldon’s archenemy until season five on TBBT. Aside from acting, voice acting, and writing, Wheaton also servers as host and co-creator of a YouTube board game show called TableTop.
Recently he appeared on the television series Bill Nye Saves the World and Whose Line is it Anyway?. At 45, Wheaton is doing pretty well for himself.
Laurie Metcalf as Mary Cooper
62 year old Laurie Metcalf is television royalty. Back in 1988, Metcalf landed the role of Jackie Harris on Roseanne, and carried on portraying until 1997. With a number of award nominations and wins to her name, Metcalf considers herself a workaholic.
Although her character, Mary Cooper, is insanely different from her highly intelligent son, Sheldon. But hey, we didn’t need to tell you that now did we?
Sara Gilbert as Leslie Winkle
Seems like Roseanne and The Big Bang Theory just go hand in hand as another Roseanne alum makes the list. Gilbert has made appearances on various shows like 24, Will & Grace, and Private Practice.
Since 2010, Gilbert has been co-host and executive producer of the talk show, The Talk. On TBBT, her character went from main cast member to guest role as producers couldn’t come up with new material for her role.
Mayim Bialik as Amy Fowler
Oh look, it’s Sheldon’s highly intelligent girlfriend Amy Fowler. In real life, Mayim Bialik is also wicked smart as she holds a B.S. degree in neuroscience, along with minors in Hebrew and Jewish studies. Moreover she has a Ph.D in neuroscience. Told you she was crazy smart on and off screen.
Bialik has been nominated four times for the Primetime Emmy Award as well. The 41 year old actress classifies herself as a feminist.
Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz
Simon Helberg plays Howard Wolowitz, an engineer and astronaut with an overbearing mother. Eventually the nerdy engineer marries Bernadette, showing serious character development for Wolowitz.
The 36 year old was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in the 2016 film Florence Foster Jenkins. Helberg is also a musician and comedian.
Laura Spencer as Emily Sweeney
Season seven introduced fans to the dermatologist Emily who dates Raj for some time. Her weird sense of humor made her an easy fan favorite. Although she also appeared in the long running show Bones from seasons 9 to 12.
Most recently the 31 year old appeared on Heartland, Sleepy Hollow, and the web series Edgar Allan Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party.
Kunal Nayyar as Rajesh Koothrappali
Speaking of Raj, the British-Indian actor is up next. After Nayyar graduated, he working as in American TV ads and various plays in London. In 2015, Nayyar also published a book all about his career journey titled Yes, My Accent is Real.
Although his TBBT role places him third on the World’s Highest-Paid TV Actors list. Lastly, he’s married to the Miss India 2006 winner, Neha Kapur. Together, they live in Los Angeles.
Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom
Every fan known Stuart Bloom, he’s the owner of The Comic Center of Pasdena. Apart from being recognized for his role on The Big Bang Theory, you might also know Sussman as Walter from Ugly Betty.
At 47 years of age, Sussman was (after the sixth season of The Big Bang Theory), promoted to a series regular. A pretty huge milestone in his career.
Alessandra Torresani as Claire
30 year old Alessandra Torresani plays Claire, a screenwriter/bartender who dates Raj. Prior to The Big Bang Theory, Torresani appeared on JAG, ER, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Husbands.
The 30 year old was also on Lucifer and the film Step Sisters, which comes out in 2018. Did we mention she also holds a black belt in taekwondo? Well, now you know.
Aarti Mann as Priya Koothrappali
Man, we’re really on the Raj train – meet Aarti Mann who plays Raj’s younger sister and dates Leonard in season four. While Mann has only had small roles in other shows like Heroes and Suits, the 39 year old is still going strong.
Connecticut born and raised, Mann graduated from New York University with a degree in film writing and directing. This is also where she practiced acting.
Sara Rue as Stephanie Barnett
Fans were introduced to Stephanie Barnett in season two and she had quite the weird, brief relationship with Sheldon. Although we all know that Sheldon and Amy are meant to be. Sorry, not sorry.
Although you may recognize her from Popular, Less than Perfect, Rules of Engagement, or Bones.
Margo Harshman as Alex Jensen
Remember Alex? Harshman played Sheldon’s assitant and a doctoral student at Caltech Physics. Most of us millennials will recognize her as Tawny Dean from the Disney Channel show Even Stevens. Or you know her as Delilah Fielding, Timothy McGee’s paraplegic wife on the hit show NCIS.
Harshman is from San Diego and from age two, she appeared in a beauty pageant. Even from a young age, she knew she was meant to act.
Brian Patrick Wade as Kurt
Oh look, it’s Penny’s macho ex-boyfriend. But when it comes to TV roles, Wade is often known as Capt. Craig Schwetje from the mini-series Generation Kill and as Alpha Werewolf Ennis on Teen Wolf.
Apart from acting, Wade is also a physical trainer. I mean, we’ve all seen his role as the hunky lap dancer on the show CSI: Miami. Haven’t we?
Charlotte Newhouse as Joy
Bernadette’s friend Joy is up next, while her role was brief, it was memorable. Previously she played the part of Jules Hayes in the series Brainstorm and appeared on Community as Professor Baker.
As an actress and writer, Charlotte Newhouse has done pretty well for herself. Remember that Idiotsitter was just a web series in early 2014 before Comedy Central picked it up in 2016.
Valerie Azlynn as Alicia
Think back to way back when Alicia was the aspiring actress who lived in the apartment above Leonard, Penny, and Sheldon. Man, that seems likes ages ago. And with 11 seasons, that makes sense.
Azlynn has appeared in minor roles in films and shows over the years such as Tropic Thunder and Sullivan & Son.
Brooke D’Orsay as Christy Vanderbel
Now who remembers Penny’s friend from back home who was engaged to her cousin? Yup, that-a one. Since Brooke D’Orsay appeared in The Big Bang Theory, she has also appeared in How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, and Royal Pains.
However the 35 year old is currently taking a break from acting. We hope that D’Orsay comes back to the big screen or finds something else she truly love.
Steven Yeun as Sebastian
Before Leonard became Sheldon’s roommate, Steven Yeun AKA Sebastian, was the first. And let’s just say, he didn’t really like Sheldon all that much. I know, crazy right?
Since his TBBT day, Yeun was on The Walking Dead for seven seasons, so yeah, we’d say he’s doing pretty well.
Riki Lindhome as Ramona Nowitzki
Ramona Nowitzki was the girl who works at Caltech and is a bit stalker-ish when it comes to Sheldon. Or rather one of his newly developed theorems. Riki on the other hand is known for her roles in Million Dollar Baby and The Last House on the Left.
The 38 year old has a new film coming out called Under the Silver Lake. Plus, Lindhome is also the host of the Nerdist podcast Making It.
Mark Harelik as Dr. Eric Gablehauser
Leonard, Raj, and Sheldon all report to Dr. Eric Gablehauser, the head of the Physics Department at Caltech. Who also happens to be dating Sheldon’s mom? Hmm, that’s just hard to digest.
Mark is more than an actor though, he’s also a playwright. Moreover Mark has appeared in some huge movies and TV productions, like Jurassic Park III, Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, Prison Break, and more.
Ian Scott Rudolph as Captain Sweatpants
Yes we know, Captain Sweatpants doesn’t really have a role on the show but he’s still a huge part of the whole story. Every time we see him, he’s wearing sweats and a superhero t-shirt.
Throughout his career, Rudolph has only had small roles and TBBT was his first credited role. So we’d say things are looking up!
Eliza Dushku as Angela Page
UMM – Eliza! Eliza Dushku is just my favorite and as far as slayers go, she’s number one. Anyways, on The Big Bang Theory, her character is an FBI agent investigating Howard after he applied to the Equipped Surveillance Satellite Team.
Although most of us know Eliza from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, and Bring It On. The 37 year old is engaged to Peter Palandjian.
Courtney Henggeler as Missy Cooper
Guys, look! It’s Sheldon’s polar opposite fraternal sister, Missy. Courtney Henggeler’s role in TBBT was actually her first and since then, she’s had a few appearances in other shows.
Although she does star alongside Anna Faris and Allison Janney on the CBS series Mom. Apart from acting, the New Jersey girl is also a model and singer.
John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke
To put it lightly, Barry Kripke Ph.D. is really the guy we all love to hate. But hey, he brings it upon himself. Aside from acting, John Ross Bowie is also a writer and comedian.
Bowie has made some guest appearances on Reno 911!, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Glee, and Good Luck Charlie. Moreover he wrote a book on the cult movie Heathers.
Christine Baranski as Dr. Beverly Hofstadter
65 year old Christine Baranski is a well known stage and screen actress. One with a Tony award to her long list of achievements. Up until season eight, thanks to Sheldon butting in, we only knew Dr. Beverly as Leonard’s insanely narcissistic, unloving, and overly analytical mama.
The 15 time Emmy nominee has appeared on The Good Wife, Addams Family Values, Cruel Intentions, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Chicago, and so much more.
Carol Ann Susi as Debbie Wolowitz
It’s true, we never actually saw the face of Debbie Wolowizt but we knew her as Howard’s completely overbearing Jewish mother. With her loud, New Jersey accent, Debbie was a loved character on The Big Bang Theory.
Most tragically at the age of 62, in 2017, Carol Ann Susi passed away from cancer. The show’s producers wrote a deeply heartwarming message after her passing, “Mrs. Wolowitz, every time you spoke, we laughed. You’re in our hearts forever.”
Brian George as Dr. V.M Koothrappali
No doubt you’re aware that Brian George plays the highly successful gynecologist in New Delhi, India, Dr. V.M Koothrappali. In the real world, Brian George is an Israeli-born British-Canadian actor who has appeared on film and television, plus is a voice actor.
And yes, before you ask, he is that guy. You know, the Pakistani restaurateur Babu Bhatt from the hit show Seinfeld.
Casey Sander as Mike Rostenkowski
Yup, Mike Rostenkowski is Howard’s father-in-law and Bernadette’s dad! On the show he plays a retired cop who is still tough to his core, which means he’s absolutely comical on camera.
Sander has appeared on various television shows such as Malcolm in the Middle, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Criminal Minds, Mad Men, and Sons of Anarchy.
Alice Amter as Mrs. Koothrappali
British born actress Alice Amter is referred to as “The Chameleon.” Probably because she’s appeared many times in various shows but in more of a “background” actress.
