This is how we wound up with a plain and unpunctuated pillar with a sculpture of George Washington on top of it. Even though they hired an American designer for the project, this statue was the work of an Italian. Enrico Causici designed the piece that was added to the top of the column in 1829.

Why It Is Called The Monumental City
Regardless, the Washington Monument went to be one of the biggest attractions in Baltimore. Even though it did not have the originally planned decorations, people liked it. As a matter of fact, the city has since become known for this structure. This is the reason some people call it “The Monumental City.”
