The Boy Changed His Life
Clapton’s life changed after he became a father, but there were a few things that remained the same. He was still an alcoholic, for example, even though he didn’t drink around Conor. In reality, Norman reports that Clapton spent every time with his son, who was suffering from “white-knuckle sobriety,” and that he’d quickly hand the boy back to Del Santo – and then he’d apparently hit the vodka hard.
Too Much In Australia
This routine continued for over a year for Clapton, eventually reaching its climax when he was touring Australia in the Fall of 1987. All the binge drinking, accompanied with a heavy work schedule reach it’s limit for Clapton, where he explained that he couldn’t stop shaking. He couldn’t live without a drink, but couldn’t live with one. He was in a tight spot, and he was just about getting by in terms of his music. If this continued, everything would surely implode.
