Julian wondered if he had previously assessed Elara too severely. He recalled the fights, her teary pleas, and the hasty decision to leave. He had a moment of doubt. Could he have been mistaken? However, he dismissed the concept just as soon. ‘I did what I had to do,’ he told himself firmly, pushing uncertainty to the back of his mind.

Julian began having vivid nighttime dreams. He dreamed of the children he had never fully known, and felt their presence as if they were there next to him. Each dream made it harder to deny their presence. He’d wake up in a cold sweat, the children’s faces still on his mind. ‘Why now?’ he asked. These dreams added another degree of complication to his already chaotic thoughts.
