Keeping secrets
Elara concealed her children’s origins in order to protect them. When inquiries concerning their father came up, she found it increasingly difficult to respond. “Mom, where is Dad?” they inquired. Elara smiled and redirected the discussion. Their father’s absence was a difficult matter for her to deal with on a daily basis. She believed that telling the truth would make matters worse for her children.

Rising questions
The triplets’ curiosity about their father increased, and their questions became increasingly frequent. “Why don’t we have a dad like the other kids?” they complained. Elara frequently felt herself on the point of tears. She strained to keep up the facade, her heart bleeding with each question. “He’s just not here,” she’d respond, wishing she could provide more. She was unable to properly respond because she was afraid of sharing too much information.
