From 1903 to 1979, the Panama Canal Zone had been an unincorporated American territory. The area had been a malaria hotspot. As we all know, this is a disease that is transmitted by these pesky critters. The authorities knew that they could not risk the workers contracting it if they wanted to finish the project. During his assignment there, Potter was able to learn a great deal about pest control!

Once Disney learned about what Potter did to control the mosquitoes in the Panama Canal Zone, the filmmaker offered him a job right away. The engineer accepted the offer and started to use his vast knowledge of pest control to good use! He hopped on the “Florida Project,” which eventually turned into the Disney World that we all know and love.
