Helen Stephens, an American sprinter, won two gold medals and set a new Olympic record in the 100-meter dash at the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics. For decades, Stephens’ world record (11.5 seconds!) stayed unchallenged until Wilma Rudolph surpassed it in 1960.
