Clapton first joined the Yardbirds in 1963, when he was only 18 years old. Clapton created a reputation for himself among the bluesy rockers who were having a lot of success at the time. Despite this, the young musician’s propensity of postponing engagements to repair broken guitar strings gained him the nickname “Slowhand” from the crowds who began a slow handclap in anticipation of his arrival.
