Clapton apparently sought to court Boyd again after leaving drugs, with greater success this time. Boyd divorced Harrison in 1974, and she married Clapton in 1979 after settling down with him. During this time, Clapton began recording and, with “I Shot the Sheriff,” achieved chart success for the first time in 1974.
A Massive Drinker
Regardless, the musician continued to drink. And his habit – which was claimed to have amounted to a couple of bottles of vodka per day in the late 1960s – inevitably took its toll on his marriage. In a 1999 interview with the Sunday Times in the United Kingdom, Clapton admits to assaulting Boyd during their time together. He explained, “I know that when I was a full-blown, practicing alcoholic, everyone used to walk around me on eggshells.”
