Before she played the matriarch on the show, she was best known for starring in Broadway musicals like Fanny and Wish You Were Here. The actress has always been a dancer and singer. She was only two years old when her mother taught her how to sing. By the time she was 12, she was already regularly performing at her local grocery store!

She reached the 54th spot on the Entertainment Weekly list of 100 Greatest TV Icons. Unfortunately, the actress passed away on Thanksgiving in 2016. She had been 82 years old at the time of her death.
