Ian Thorpe

At the start of the century, Thorpe, the Australian ‘Thorpedo’, became a swimming sensation and was the hometown hero at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000, walking away with three golds — including the 4×200 and 4×100 free relays and the 400 m freestyle. The conquering hero went on to continue his winning streak in Athens in 2004, capturing a gold medal once more in the 400 free and winning another gold medal in the 200 m free. Thorpe also started the charity Ian Thorpe’s Fountain for Youth, which is an organization that aims to raise funds for childhood illnesses research. In a televised interview in 2014, he came out as gay and until June 2019, was in a relationship with Ryan Channing. Through his swimming prowess charitable and works, Thorpe was awarded Member of the Order of Australia.
