In the same year, she flew to Los Angeles with the team to represent Romania during the 1984 Olympic Games. However, she got a huge shock when she found out who was the American team’s coach. It was none other than Bela Karolyi, her old coach. If that was not hard enough to swallow, she also noticed he had taken a talented new gymnast under his wing. Her name was Mary Lou Retton.

Now, let us take a closer look at the new girl. Born on January 24, 1984, Mary Lou Retton was passionate about the sport. In an ironic turn of events, Nadia was actually the gymnast who made her consider the sport. She was particularly impressed by her Montreal Olympic Games performance in 1976. She eventually found herself training under Bela and Marta Karolyi.
