As you can imagine, Disney wanted to unlock the potential from the eastern side of the United States. The filmmaker picked a site located in Bay Lake, a city in Florida near Orlando and Kissimmee. Disney was determined to make his mark on this side of the country here. Not only that, but he wanted it to become known as “The Happiest Place on Earth.”

And so he started to develop the idea in earnest! The planning was done in secret across the ‘60s. He referred to it under a code name: “The Florida Project.” The filmmaker wanted to turn it into more than your regular amusement park. He had a number of things in mind as he worked on the idea. Among other things, he came up with the area of the resort that we now know as Epcot.
