The Surprise
Mark pressed his cellphone to his ear to make sure that he was hearing what the vet was saying. The vet repeated himself to make sure that Mark was hearing the words coming out of his mouth. The vet said that the puppies they had brought in weren’t actually dogs. Mark didn’t know what that meant. What could they be if they weren’t dogs?

The Explanation
Mark listened attentively as the vet produced the words, “red foxes”. He was stunned. Everyone was certain that they were looking at a litter of puppies, not a small troop of foxes! It confused Mark even further since they were not red at all. However, at birth, they tend to be a darker shade.
