A lot of time had passed already and yet there was no sign of their mother. The cubs cried for her from the hole, but still, there was nothing. Everyone started to wonder if perhaps the mother fox had seen everything and she was spooked.

It took a few nights of waiting out to see if their mother would come back for them to decide that it was probably a lost cause. It was heartbreaking to understand that she would never be reunited with her pups. They needed to be taken care of.
