Curtis Mayfield was a member of the 1950s and 1960s big band The Impressions, known for its music and civil rights advocacy. Born in Chicago, he began performing as part of a gospel group. He joined Impressions when he encountered fellow artist Jerry Butler. He wrote songs that with their social awareness were part of the civil rights movement. His record, “People Get Ready,” was #24 on Rolling Stone’s Greatest All-Time Tracks. He guided Super Fly, too.
