The Mask of Zorro
1998 is when Catherine Zeta-Jones broke out in the American film scene. Obviously when she starred alongside Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins in The Mask of Zorro. After this, she landed plenty more leading roles. Maybe it’s because of her sophisticated style and sultry looks? Probably. In any case, she starred in the hit film Entrapment with Sean Connery and in Traffic, earning a Golden Globe nomination.
Landing the Role
Speaking of ‘Zorro’, Steven Spielberg had noticed Zeta-Jones when she appeared in the mini-series Titanic so he recommended her to Martin Campbell, who was directing The Mask of Zorro at the time. Moreover Campbell chose Zeta-Jones as his leading lady over Izabella Scorupco, who originally was his choice for the part.
