You’ve heard of the big league colleges like Brown, Yale, Colombia, Harvard and plenty other fancy schools all over America. But do you know which of your favorite fictional charters attended these very real colleges? Don’t fret, we’ve conjured up a pretty hefty list of our favorite fictional characters and their alma maters.
Andy Bernard – Cornell University
How could we ever forget the wonderful and brilliant Andy Bernard from The Office, oh that’s right, we will never forget him. He’s forever in our hearts. Andy went to Cornell, folks, ever heard of it? Andy bleeds big red through and through. And let’s not forget that he sang for Cornell’s A Capella group, Here Comes Treble!
Olivia Pope – Georgetown University
Of course our girl Olivia Pope from Scandal went to Georgetown’s Law School, duh, she’s incredible. Oh yah, she went to Princeton for her undergrad which only makes her one kick ass woman. I wonder if that’s where she learned her stone-cold, “it’s handled” attitude? Pretty sure she couldn’t have gotten where she did if she went to online colleges…but then again, Olivia Pope can do just about anything.
Marshall Eriksen – Columbia University
Marshall may have met Lily and Ted at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, but he himself attended Columbia Law School. He had big dreams of working for the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) because he’s a huge environmentalist at heart. Let’s remember folks that he goes on to accept a judgeship and in the final season, we see him go on to be elected into the New York State Supreme Court. Boom, lawyered.
Carrie Mathison – Princeton University
The intense Carrie Mathison, portrayed by the brilliant Claire Danes, went to Princeton no less. She ended up getting her BA in Arabic Language and Literatures and then went on to land a job with the CIA. All the while suffering from bipolar disorder. That’s one smart woman that we’re proud to know onscreen. You think she’ll ever go on to get an online masters degree? You never know.
Summer Roberts – Brown University
Rachel Bilson’s portrayal of the rich girl with a brain and an even bigger heart, Summer Roberts on The O.C. is one for the history books. Summer is a kick ass role model. She got a 2300 on her SATs which launched her acceptance into none other than Brown University. While at Brown, she finds her true calling in life and that’s where you really see her character grow into a powerful woman. Summer becomes an environmentalist and an animal rights issues activist. Girl power!
Frank Underwood – Harvard University
Underwood 2016, people! Of course the current president in the hit show, House of Cards went to Harvard Law School. We’re pretty sure that even before Harvard, he had plotted his way into the White House. I mean, he’s Frank Underwood, what do you expect?
Dr. Gregory House – Johns Hopkins University
Ah, Dr. House, how we adore you. Portrayed by the handsome and talented Hugh Laurie, Dr. House naturally went to John Hopkins University as an undergrad where he studied physics and had immense interest in dark matter. I mean, of course he did. Then, he was accepted to the John Hopkins medical school and was top of his class, until he was caught cheating. Smooth. He would go on to finish medical school at the University of Michigan instead.
Meredith Grey – Dartmouth University
Grey’s Anatomy is well into its 13th season! And boy, what a roller coaster it has been so far, especially for the beloved Meredith Grey. Before she started her internship at Seattle Grace Hospital, she attended Dartmouth of course and she’s now the chief of general surgery. But even now, we still see Meredith sporting her grey Dartmouth t-shirt. Get it, girl.
Rory Gilmore – Yale University
Everyone’s favorite book worm, Rory Gilmore. Rory’s dream had always been to go to Harvard University but after being accepted to all the major Ivy League schools she applied to, she chose Yale because it had absolutely everything she was ultimately looking for. It’s also her grandparent’s alma mater. She graduated from Yale with an English degree and with honors plus a membership in the Phi Beta Kappa. FYI, Team Jess forever!
Alex Dunphy – California Institute of Technology
Alex Dunphy is and always will be the hard working, intelligent, college seeking high schooler we all know and love. I mean, the girl played the cello because it would give her the edge she needed over other college applicants. All that worked out cause our girl ended up at Caltech.
Will Truman and Grace Adler – Columbia University
Our favorite duo from hit show Will and Grace first met at Colombia University. Later they would go on to be best friends when Will admitted he was gay and they finally stopped awkwardly dating. Columbia produced two pretty great people here. Will became a lawyer, and Grace became an interior designer. Not too shabby.
Zoey Bartlet – Georgetown University
That’s right, the president’s daughter paved her own way by graduating from Georgetown’s undergrad program, and she was summa cum laude, no less. She’s well on her way to shatter that glass ceiling, we’re right behind you, Zo!
Dr. Elliot Reid – Brown University
There is no comedic, heart wrenching show that can ever out-master Scrubs. Our beloved Dr. Reid attended Brown and no one but Sarah Chalke could bring that character to life quite like her. Dr. Reid was even valedictorian of her high school class plus when she was at Brown, she was a kick ass Omega Beta Gamma – which isn’t a real sorority but who cares?
Elle Woods – Harvard University
No way we would ever exclude Elle Woods from this list! Legally Blonde is near and dear to all our hearts. We watched Elle go from fashionista, sorority girl studying Fashion Design to studying Law at Harvard to get her ridiculous and undeserving boyfriend back. What, like it’s hard? But did you know that in the novel, she was actually supposed to go to Stanford Law School? Either way, both schools are top notch.
Leslie Knope – Indiana University Bloomington
Who doesn’t love the quirky show Parks and Recreation, anyone? Didn’t think so. Knope has abundant love and pride for her Indiana city of Pawnee so it’s not shocking that she attended the Illinois state school AND graduated summa cum laude. Show off. Just kidding, she’s fantastic, I love you Amy Poehler!
Dr. Percival Ulysses “Perry” Cox – Johns Hopkins University
The intense but lovable (don’t tell him we said that), Dr. Cox when to John Hopkins for med school. But did you know he also attended a fake school, Hale. Like Yale but not Yale at all.
Tony Stark – MIT
Of course Iron Man went to MIT. Robert Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark attended MIT when he was only 15 and he graduated at 19. Pssh, overachiever. He could have just gotten an engineering degree online but then again, it is MIT.
Charles Boyle – Sarah Lawrence College
Our favorite funny man Charles Boyle, portrayed by the one and only Joe Lo Truglio, went to Sarah Lawrence College before joining the NYPD. Nice work, officer.
Cristina Yang – Stanford University
Our favorite kick a** doctor, Cristina Yang went to Stanford University where she got her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and her M.D., where she graduated first of her class. Let’s not forget she’s currently a researcher, chief medical officer, and director of cardio thoracic surgery at the Klausman Institute for Medical Research in Switzerland. Appease her brain not her beauty!
Dana Scully – University of Maryland
Our favorite FBI agent, red-headed scientist and hunter of supernatural forces, Dana Scully. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from The University of Maryland and her undergraduate thesis was titled ‘Einstein’s Twin Paradox: A New Interpretation’.
Nate Archibald – Columbia University
Heartthrob, Nate Archibald from Gossip Girl broke our precious hearts left and right. But we couldn’t be more proud that he didn’t follow in his father’s footsteps and attend Duke, instead he followed his own heart and pursued his own dreams by going to Columbia University. XOXO, Gossip Girl.
