Young possums normally hold onto their mothers to feel warm and safe. At this stage, the babies are still dependent on the mother for food and shelter. The possum latching onto Kato’s fur might have accidentally lost its grip on the mother possum. Perhaps an incident occurred which forced the mother possum to abandon her baby. For whatever reason it was abandoned, the baby possum decided it was safe enough to ride onto Kato’s back. It was probably hoping that the bigger creature would provide the care that the mother used to give. Having something to latch onto made it feel safe again.
