The first precaution that the firefighters took was wearing gloves. The reason for this was to avoid getting their scent on the puppies. After extracting the babies from the sewer, they would put them on a sheet that they had spread out next to the hole.

Cautiously, one of the firefighters put his hand into the sewer to rescue the first of the lot. The tiny size of the animal actually surprised everyone. After placing him on the sheet, the minute puppy moved about freely.
