Founder Of The American Red Cross
Clara Barton is a nurse who’s also the founder of the American Red Cross, who helped bring the organization to the US in 1881. Before that, she was a self-taught caregiver during the American Civil War, helping treat Union soldiers and solve logistical needs for makeshift hospitals around the country at that time. She’d also worked for the International Red Cross before and during the 1870 Franco-Prussian War in Geneva, Switzerland, and was inspired to bring the Red Cross to the US at that time.
National Nurses Week
President Ronald Reagan signed a proposal to create a ‘National Recognition Day for Nurses’ on May 6 (although many people have acknowledged the holiday prior). The American Nurses Association (ANA) extended it to May 12, which also happens to be the same date for International Nurses Day (IND), and the birthday of Florence Nightingale.
